HISTORY · THE HISTORIC PENINSULA
The old city, properly.
The historic peninsula rewards a slower route. Spend time understanding the monuments instead of racing between entrances.
THE IDEA
Start with the story, not the queue.
Sultanahmet puts Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history within walking distance. The challenge isn't distance on a map: it is queues, security checks, opening arrangements and how much time you actually want to spend inside each building.
Rather than advertise a day that promises every landmark, this suggested private route makes a deliberate choice between the palace, the cistern and the mosques. Tell us which two are essential and the operating team can build the day around them.
These stops are a planning example, not a confirmed running order. Your guide and the operating team will agree the route for your actual dates.
A possible route.
Sultanahmet Square
Begin at the former Hippodrome area. Use the open square to understand the city’s imperial geography before deciding where to go inside.
Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia area
See the two landmarks in context. Entry rules, visitor sections and prayer periods affect the plan, so the team will check the arrangements for your travel day.
Basilica Cistern or Topkapı Palace
Choose a longer indoor visit instead of trying to rush through both. The cistern suits a shorter architectural stop; the palace deserves considerably more time.
Backstreets toward the bazaar
Finish through lanes, courtyards and shopfronts around the old commercial quarter, with time for tea or lunch if it fits your pace.
CHOOSE WHAT MATTERS
Decisions worth making.
Palace or cistern?
Topkapı is the more substantial visit; the Basilica Cistern works well if you prefer a less museum-heavy day.
Market time
The Grand Bazaar area can be added, but shops and market opening patterns differ by day.
Religious buildings
Modest clothing and prayer-related visitor restrictions should be expected.

The examples on this page are not confirmed bookings or promises of admission. Route, guide, tickets, meals, transport, availability and cancellation terms will be set out in the operator’s written proposal.
Before you go.
Can we cover Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern in one day?
Sometimes, but it makes for a longer, more crowded day. If either is a priority, say so; the route will be shaped around that visit.
Does the tour include entry tickets?
No inclusions are assumed at this stage. The written quote will state exactly which tickets, guide services or transfers are included.
Is the Old City accessible for reduced mobility?
Some surfaces are uneven and individual monuments have different access limitations. Share your specific needs before a route is proposed.
What if our tour date is a Tuesday?
Topkapı Palace is normally closed on Tuesdays. A guide can suggest an alternative focus, subject to the current attraction schedules.
