FOOD · EVERYDAY CITY LIFE

A city at street level.

Markets, bakeries and table conversations—an appetite-led walk without a staged tasting circuit.

THE IDEA

The city is best tasted slowly.

Food is often the best introduction to a neighbourhood. In Istanbul, breakfast, a market stall, a bakery and a long lunch can each tell a different story about the city. The aim here is not to tick off a fixed number of snacks.

Choose one side of the city and follow its rhythm. Kadıköy might suit a market-and-café afternoon; Karaköy, Galata or another central quarter might work better depending on where you are staying and what you want to eat.

↗ A ROUTE TO DISCUSS

These stops are a planning example, not a confirmed running order. Your guide and the operating team will agree the route for your actual dates.

A possible route.

01

Start with the neighbourhood

Meet near an accessible transport link and talk through the food traditions of the area, from bakeries to produce stalls.

02

Browse a food market or local shops

Look at seasonal ingredients, cheeses, olives, breads or spices where practical. Availability varies with market days and shop opening times.

03

Pause for something worth tasting

Depending on your preferences, this could mean simit, börek, meze or a sit-down lunch. No particular venue or tasting is guaranteed before a quote.

04

Walk the streets between stops

Take time for architecture, tea, conversations and ordinary neighbourhood life rather than moving from restaurant to restaurant.

CHOOSE WHAT MATTERS

Decisions worth making.

Street food or a sit-down lunch?

Tell us whether you prefer several small tastes or one longer meal.

Vegetarian and vegan options

Istanbul offers many vegetable- and legume-based dishes; exact options depend on the chosen route and venues.

Allergies

Disclose serious allergies early. No kitchen or vendor can be described as allergen-free without individual verification.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Practical details.

  • Food, drinks and restaurant bills are included only when explicitly itemised in the quote.
  • Walking pace and the amount of time spent eating can be adjusted around your group.
  • Markets can have different opening patterns by area, weekday and religious holiday.

Useful official information: Kadıköy food and neighbourhood context

The examples on this page are not confirmed bookings or promises of admission. Route, guide, tickets, meals, transport, availability and cancellation terms will be set out in the operator’s written proposal.

THE DETAILS

Before you go.

Are tastings included?

Only if the written proposal explicitly lists them. We prefer to be clear rather than advertise an unspecified number of food stops.

Can you cater to vegetarians?

Potentially. Describe your needs and the team can propose an appropriate route and venues; they will confirm specific options.

Is this a cooking class?

Not by default. This is a guided food-and-neighbourhood walk; cooking experiences would be separately arranged if available.

Will we visit tourist restaurants?

The focus is on the selected neighbourhood and your interests. Individual venues are only confirmed once the route is planned.
